Starbucks: Commit to phase out all plastic packaging

Starbucks has committed to look into producing a #bettercup, including more recyclable and reusable plastic cups. Let's remind Starbucks that when we "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" reduction should be the first step and recycling should be a last resort. It's time for Starbucks to stop using plastic cups altogether.

It's no secret that our oceans are full of plastic -- as are our streets, lakes and trails. With the announcement that China will no longer be recycling plastic for the United States, the myth of "recyclable plastics" is beginning to disintegrate.  Starbucks has already rolled out "reusable" plastic cups but I routinely see them littered on the street and spilling out of trash cans. Since plastics are harmful from production to disposal, there really is no way to use plastic responsibly.

As Starbucks has indicated in the last year that they wish to be a progressive company socially and environmentally it is time for Starbucks to take the only reasonable next step and phase out plastic cups completely. Starbucks is the largest coffee chain in the world and such a move from them would surely encourage others to follow suit.

Starbucks: Rather than working on a #bettercup, why don't you work on the #bestcup -- one completely free of plastic.
