Eddie Van Halen pioneered and changed the world of rock via his guitar--and in doing so, he won the hearts and awes of many (even in the age of New Wave). Edward Van Halen was a self-taught guitar prodigy. In order to budget at a young age, he built his own guitar (his famous "Frankenstrat" guitar) from within his childhood home's garage--the first of many musical instruments that he would go on to create and eventually sell to the public. But, the creation of the "Frankenstrat" not only showed Eddie's savvy-side, it went on to show his knack for engineering and innovating musical instruments that created the notes he thought of and, coincidentally, surpassed the models before them.

Take the "Frankenstrat" for example-- building it himself from a $50 Charvel body, an $80 neck, and affixing it with a humbucking pickup, Eddie created a fatter sound that matches that of Gibson electrics, like Les Pauls. In 1978, Eddie explained in an interview to Guitar Player that in his many experiments with guitars, he had figured out a sound to his liking in the Frankenstrat: “If you put the pickup really close to the bridge, it sounds trebly; if you put it too far forward, you get a sound that isn’t good for rhythm. I like it towards the back; it gives the sound a little sharper edge and bite.”

Eddie introduced "finger tapping", playing the guitar with two hands in a similar fashion to how you play a piano (which he also did). Before this musical contribution, his fellow guitar predecessors were using their picking hands to play notes their fretting hand normal would in order to widen the range of the musical phrase, but Eddie revamped it all with the tap of his fingers. Aside from this, Eddie composed invigorating solos (e.g. "Eruption") to compositions.

Eddie Van Halen left behind a legacy that expanded beyond music. And it would only be very fitting for the public to learn more about this Los Angeles County native to remember him by--1 of which is a memorial statue, which is being petitioned for here. Having played in many places around the world, the Los Angeles STAPLES Center was one of Van Halen's venues to rock. It would be befitting to have Eddie Van Halen's memorial statue placed here, among the  other greats who shined the LA grounds.
