Fund the MLK Research and Education Institute @ STANFORD
Stanford wants to "confront racial justice," and stay true to "the values we personally hold, and that Stanford, as an institution, cherishes." I find no better way of doing so on campus than supporting the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Research and Education Institute on campus. It houses copies of his work, writings, and other effects. It is a crucial center for study of MLK and the movement he is a part of, allowing for important scholarship and learning. As Provost Drell pointed out, the issues of today stem from "systemic issues of racism, inequality and injustice that have plagued our social fabric across history. We condemn this history". Perhaps the best way to condemn this history is to learn more about it and grapple with what it can teach us today in this moment.
It needs our help. Even with an endowment of over $27 billion, Stanford's support for the Institute is on life-support. It survives on its own small endowment and the university does not support it enough. Not only that, but despite the decades of building on campus, the Institute is still housed in a 1960s era temporary building. I find this absolutely ridiculous, and you should too.
I encourage you to sign on to call on Stanford to increase its yearly financial support and help increase the King Institute's endowment. We cannot let this amazing resource go without the support it needs for a day long!
