It's time to revive Stanford's humanities core

On February 21, Stanford students received an email from The Stanford Review highlighting the lack of humanities education at Stanford University. The Review's proposed solution is to "mandate that freshmen complete a two-quarter Western Civilization requirement covering the politics, history, philosophy, and culture of the Western world." While reactions to their proposal have been mixed, the problem identified is a serious one that the administration is looking into.
To some, the Review's proposal is a valid, specific call-to-action for the Stanford administration, but to others, the singular focus on "Western" thought is problematic. We believe it is critical that a foundational humanities experience centers on crucial thought and ideas, irrespective of geographic origin. Sign this petition to call for a more emphasized Stanford humanities education that encompasses both Western and non-Western politics, history, philosophy, and culture.
