The Issue
- On Monday October 14th, 2013, Leobardo Meza was unjustly fired from McDonald's (1260 Park Blvd San Diego, CA) for trying to pay for a hamburger for a homeless person. Homeless people often frequent this McDonald's location and it is common for workers to buy them food if they cannot pay for it.
- Leobardo, who has worked for McDonald's for the last 6 years and was earning $9 an hour, has recently participated in a campaign to raise wages and improve working conditions for workers in the fast food industry (the national "Fight for $15" campaign). This is the first time that the management at this McDonald's has enforced their policy of prohibiting workers from purchasing food for homeless people, and it has cost Leobardo his job.
- Under these circumstances, it appears as though the management at this McDonald's may be retaliating against Leobardo for standing up for his rights and trying to improve his working conditions.
- By signing this petition you communicate to the owner of this franchise (Bob Sutherland) that Leobardo Meza should be given his job back and that workers should not be victimized for exercising their right to speak out for better wages and working conditions.
