Standing Behind Those Who Stand Up for What’s Right.
The Issue
A Petition of Appreciation and Support for New Hanover County Manager Chris Coudriet, his staff, and county officials
For more than two years, thousands of New Hanover County residents have stood up, spoken out, and asked that their voices be heard and their legitimate concerns about public safety be taken seriously.
When County Manager Chris Coudriet made the decision to deny the proposed Hilton Bluffs development plan, and the County subsequently revoked an earlier conditional approval, those decisions represented something deeply meaningful to the community: a willingness to confront difficult questions about public safety, even when doing so could bring legal challenges.
And those challenges have now come.
On November 3, Copper Builders filed a lawsuit against New Hanover County, challenging the County Manager's authority to deny its proposed 1,800-home development and seeking to overturn the County's decisions. The developer is also seeking financial damages, attorney fees, and costs associated with delays, potentially placing an additional financial burden on New Hanover County taxpayers.
We recognize that decisions of this magnitude are neither simple nor without consequences. We also recognize the importance of public officials having the resolve to act on their responsibilities, even when their decisions may have unwanted consequences.
This petition is our opportunity to publicly express our gratitude and support for County Manager Chris Coudriet, New Hanover County staff, and Rob Zapple, whose commitment to a review process that places public safety, accountability, and the well-being of our communities at its center.
At Save Sledge Forest, we have always insisted, with a unified voice, that we matter, that standing up for what we believe is right matters, and that ordinary citizens have the power to make a difference when they speak out about what is important to them.
It is especially meaningful to see those same principles reflected in the actions of those entrusted with serving the public.
We understand that the legal process is far from over. But regardless of what comes next, we believe it is important to recognize leadership, courage, and fortitude when it matters most.
To County Manager Chris Coudriet and the officials who have worked to address these concerns: We acknowledge your diligence. We appreciate you. And we stand behind the principle that public safety must never take a back seat to development interests.
Add your name to this public expression of appreciation and support.
