The Issue

In the heart of Tulsa, I found my best friend — a resilient service dog who was once a rescue. This experience opened my eyes to the crisis surrounding animal breeding and abandonment, igniting a passion within me to enact change. Every week, I follow Tulsa Animal Services' weekly report card, and the statistics I discovered were staggering. Did you know that 40% of sheltered animals come from backyard breeders while 34% hail from exploitative puppy and kitten mills? Added to this are the devastating figures of 20% being owner surrenders and 6% are strays.

These numbers reflect a deeper issue that echoes across the country. Backyard breeding is rampant, worsened by lack of strict spay and neuter laws. Puppy and kitten mills operate with grotesque disregard for animal welfare, churning out lives for profit without any thought for well-being. It's heartbreaking that animals surrendered by their owners usually have only 3-5 short days to find a new home before they are euthanized.

To combat these dire realities, it's essential we enact nationwide standardized spay and neuter laws. By doing so, we prevent overpopulation and reduce the number of animals subject to abandonment and suffering. In addition, we need laws that recognize animal abuse as a felony. Treating animal abandonment similarly to child abandonment is crucial in acknowledging the responsibility of pet ownership.

Furthermore, shutting down cat and puppy mills should be a national mandate. These mills exist at the expense of the health and emotional well-being of innocent animals. By putting an end to such cruel practices, we give thousands of dogs and cats a fighting chance to live in loving environments.

Join me in calling for a nationwide standard for spay and neuter laws, the elimination of backyard breeding, criminalization of animal abuse and abandonment as felonies, and the shutdown of abusive mills, as well as the animal testing labs. We owe it to our furry friends to provide them with a safe and loving world. Your signature can help push forward this critical legislation, ensuring no animal is left voiceless. Please sign this petition to demand the change we need.
