Why this petition matters

Started by Lee Thompson

The Kutztown Strand theater is America's oldest operating true blooded movie theater. Established in 1912 the Strand has been a continuously operated theater, designed STRICTLY for films. A true movie theater welcoming us into the dawn of the silver screen and bringing magic and movies to people for 110 years.

Since its construction, the Strand has been a slice of history and culture, bringing Hollywood to the people of Kutztown. Having been the location of the East Coast premier of Big Fat Greek Wedding, the Strand shone with the film's star Michael Constantine on opening day. You may also remember the Strand for its hosting of the Art Film Festival as well as bringing in hometown heroes to debut their films and do artist talks.

Over the years this strong theater has always been humble. Acting as the Strand's pastor, Paul Angstadt was always the face of our hometown theater. His love of movies brought in local students and artists to shoot and show their movies with the public. Students and artists who have worked for Netflix, Warner Brothers, Adult Swim, Netflix, and even Simone Biles. Artists making and shaping entertainment as we know it all of whom have deep roots stemming from the Strand.

In Paul's passing the theater's next breaths lay in the hands of the KCP, an organization whose plans and desires for the Strand are still unclear. And with a lack of transparency from this private organization, many speculate them using the space as a community arts venue, a beer garden, or a private stage. All “community’ planning that ironically would negatively impact the local businesses by taking from their already established businesses.

It is true, this is still speculation. But with the KCP being quiet, the people of the town have voiced they want one thing and one thing only. They want to STAND WITH THE STRAND, and have it stay our town's historic, film-only theater.

If you love the Strand and want it to stay a film only theater then please sign and let your voice be heard.
