Stand with TeeJay Alvarez: Demand a Thorough Investigation and Timely Action
The Issue
On June 8, 2026, our beloved TeeJay Ignacio Alvarez was shot on Mark Avenue in Fosston, Minnesota. Although critically wounded, TeeJay fought for his life for approximately 15 hours before tragically passing away on June 9, 2026.
TeeJay was more than a victim. He was a son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin, partner, and friend who was deeply loved by his family, friends, and community. His life mattered, and his loss has left an unimaginable void that can never be filled.
Following the shooting, Cory Burnette Jr. was arrested but later released while authorities awaited the completion of the medical examiner's report due to mandatory custody timelines under Minnesota law. We understand that the legal process must be followed, but our family has been left waiting for justice while grieving an unimaginable loss.
Since his release, Cory Burnette Jr. has continued using his public social media account to post comments and content referencing the shooting, including hashtags such as **#selfdefense** and **#stillhere**. He has also commented on posts about TeeJay in ways that our family and many members of the community have experienced as mocking, taunting, and showing a complete lack of remorse. These actions have caused additional trauma to our grieving family and have shaken our community.
Our family has preserved this social media activity and has already provided it to law enforcement as part of the ongoing investigation.
This petition is not about bypassing due process or asking anyone to prejudge the outcome of the case. We believe in the justice system, and we respect that every person is entitled to a fair legal process. What we are asking for is urgency, accountability, and transparency.
We respectfully call on the Polk County Attorney's Office and all investigating agencies to prioritize TeeJay's case, promptly review the final medical examiner's findings, thoroughly evaluate all available evidence, and, if the evidence supports criminal charges, immediately file those charges and seek appropriate conditions of release or detention under Minnesota law. We also ask that this case be prosecuted to the fullest extent the evidence and the law allow.
TeeJay deserved to come home to his family. He deserved the opportunity to continue living the life that was taken from him. Instead, our family has been left to mourn while waiting for answers and justice.
We ask our community, the people of Minnesota, and supporters across the nation to stand with us. By signing this petition, you are sending a message that TeeJay's life mattered, that every victim deserves justice, and that no family should have to endure unnecessary delays while seeking accountability for the loss of a loved one.
**Justice for TeeJay is not just about one family, it is about protecting our community, honoring the value of human life, and ensuring that justice is pursued fairly, thoroughly, and without delay.**
