Stand with NYC schools suing DOE over funding cuts tied to transgender policies
The Issue
New York City Public Schools are taking a stand — and we need to stand with them.
The U.S. Department of Education has cut $47 million in promised grant funding to NYC’s magnet schools, citing the city’s transgender-inclusive policies as the reason. These policies allow students to use bathrooms and join sports teams consistent with their gender identity — in full compliance with state and city law.
Rather than support inclusive education, the federal government is punishing New York City for protecting trans students.
In response, NYC is suing the Department of Education to reverse the decision. They’re not just fighting for grant money — they’re fighting for every student’s right to feel safe and affirmed at school.
This funding supports 19 public magnet schools and countless students who rely on these programs. No child’s education should be held hostage over political disagreements, and no district should be forced to abandon civil rights protections in order to keep their classrooms funded.
We call on Secretary Linda McMahon and the U.S. Department of Education to:
- Immediately restore the $47 million in magnet school grant funding to NYC schools;
- Cease using federal funding as leverage against transgender-inclusive policies;
- Affirm that supporting transgender students does not violate Title IX — it upholds it.
Every student deserves a safe, respectful learning environment. New York City is fighting to protect that principle. Let’s show them they’re not alone.
Add your name to support NYC’s lawsuit and defend trans rights in public education.
