Stand with Moe Weed - Fight for Fair Cannabis Licensing in Trenton!

The Issue

My name is Brittany Bennett, and I am the CEO of Moe Weed LLC, a Black-owned legal cannabis business. Along with my business partner and founder, Moses Sutton, we have been serving the community of Trenton, NJ, since our formation in 2020. We received our conditional license from the state of New Jersey in 2021. We applied for a local license initially in May 2023 and again in November 2023. Despite our dedication and investment of personal funds and life savings into this venture, we face unjust obstacles from the city council.

On May 28, 2024, we presented our case to the city council, and on June 6, 2024, the council voted against our application, citing personal reasons rather than the merits of our business. This biased decision was influenced by Councilwoman Jasi Edwards' personal vendetta against our founder, Moses Sutton. Despite having the support of the Cannabis Advisory Committee (CAC), which praised our application and the positive impact Moe Weed could have on the city, the council's vote was swayed by defamatory remarks and personal biases. It is also noted that the stance of abstinence in voting by Joesph Harrison, Crystal Feliciano, Jenna Figueroa Kettenburg, Tessa Frisby, Yazminelly Gonzalez, and Jennifer Williams illustrates this council's commitment to upholding the biases and discrimination Moe Weed LLC has faced during this process.

We are protesting the City of Trenton's council vote on resolution 24-236, “RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TRENTON IN SUPPORT OF THE CLASS V CANNABIS RETAIL APPLICATION OF MOE WEED, LLC”. Moe Weed stands out for its three-year track record of community service and engagement, surpassing other newly opened stores. Our mission is to provide quality, affordable cannabis products while serving and uplifting our community.

On June 5, 2024, the council's arbitrary and capricious vote against Moe Weed was driven by personal conflicts, particularly those involving Councilwoman Jasi Edwards. Her defamatory speech against our founder, based on personal grievances, led to the council abstaining from a fair vote. This act of bias is an affront to democratic values and the principles of free speech.

Despite our efforts to engage with the city and its leadership, including numerous emails and personal messages, we have been ignored. Other applicants, including those with questionable histories and violent pasts, received council support, highlighting the discriminatory treatment towards Moe Weed LLC.

I am calling on the residents of Trenton to stand with us against this blatant corruption and bias within our city's cannabis licensing process. Our business was unfairly dismissed based on personal animosities, not on the strength of our application or business plan. As a proud American business owner, I believe in the right to free speech and the right to earn a living. The council's actions have shown that dissenting voices are not welcome in Trenton's business landscape.

Please sign our petition to protest this injustice and support Moe Weed LLC in our fight to operate legally in Trenton. Together, we can ensure that our city supports fair and transparent business practices, free from personal biases and corruption.

Thank you and Warm Regards,

Brittany Bennett, CEO of Moe Weed LLC
