Maine is facing an unprecedented and politically motivated federal lawsuit launched by the Trump administration.

This lawsuit claims to target Maine’s policies around transgender students and school sports. But let’s be clear — this is not just about athletics or trans kids. This is about an outside political agenda trying to override the will of Maine people and undermine our state's right to govern itself.

Maine has long upheld a proud tradition of fairness, inclusion, and local control. The Maine Department of Education’s approach to supporting LGBTQ+ youth — including trans students — is rooted in compassion, community values, and the understanding that decisions about education belong close to home, not dictated by Washington. 

This lawsuit is a Trojan horse. While it claims to protect fairness in sports, its real goal is to strip away Maine’s ability to make its own decisions. 

As our Governor, Janet Mills, said: 

"This matter has never been about school sports or the protection of women and girls, as has been claimed, it is about states rights and defending the rule of law against a federal government bent on imposing its will, instead of upholding the law. Let today serve as warning to all states: Maine might be among the first to draw the ire of the Federal government in this way, but we will not be the last."

We call on all Mainers and allies across the country to recognize this lawsuit for what it is: a dangerous attempt to expand federal power at the expense of state rights and local values.

Maine decides for Maine. And we will not be bullied.
