On Friday a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction (ie halted) key provisions of SB 12 - including the GSA ban, and the part of the law Katy ISD claimed prohibited staff from calling trans students by the names and pronouns they and their parents want them to be called.
For students, families, and staff negatively impacted by Katy ISD’s implementation of this anti-inclusion law- this injunction is reason to celebrate and breathe a little deeper. Even if it’s temporary. It is relief for the co-plaintiffs in the 3 named districts- including ours.
Katy ISD has 14 days to respond to this opinion. They must tell the court if they plan to:
1) Defend SB 12
2) Seek representation by the Office of the Attorney General
3) Pursue some other course all together.
I would strongly encourage you to read the press release, and the full 44 page opinion issued by the judge.
Then let the Katy ISD trustees and superintendent know how you hope the District will respond.

Possible action the board could take, that may be worth suggesting:
- Revoke (or at least revise) the SB 12 Resolution.
- Instruct the superintendent to lift prohibitions on student-led diversity and GSA/SAGA (LGBTQ+ pride) clubs.
- Instruct the superintendent to lift the prohibition on staff members calling transgender students by the names and pronouns they and their parents would like them to be called.
- Revise or repeal the FA Local Policy (anti-transgender policy) which contains several provisions that mirror the enjoined portions of SB 12.
- Revise EFB Local Policy restrictions and prohibitions on library and instructional materials that include LGBTQ+ themes and characters.
Note- before taking any of the above actions 2 or more trustees - or the board president (Lance Redmon) must add the specific board policy and/or SB 12 to a future board agenda. So it’s a good idea to encourage the trustees to take that step, too.
