Despite the harsh effects the pandemic has brought onto their livelihood, hundreds of families from urban poor communities belonging to Brgy 654 Legaspi, Intramuros, Manila now face another threat to their living. As if the burdens brought by difficulty of the youth's online classes, mass layoffs of workers, and the overall economic recession weren't enough, a notice for the demolition of their homes was recently passed. There is also no relocation program in sight.

According to the Samahan ng mga Naninirahan sa Legaspi Intramuros (local residents' association), there is a budget of roughly PHP410 million in the Intramuros Administration allocated for proper relocation programs for informal settlers. The association also emphasizes the law in place that says there should be NO DEMOLITION WITHOUT PROPER RELOCATION.

Despite this sound basis for their demands, the residents are still told that there will be no relocation issued and that the justification for the demolition to push through would be because the land is private property.

The families from Brgy 654 Legaspi have lived in the said community for generations now. As much as no demolition at all would be the most ideal for these poor families that are still suffering from the ongoing crisis, they are currently campaigning for RELOCATION AND RELIEF AMID THE PANDEMIC, NOT DEMOLITION OF THEIR HOMES. The residents' association also appeals to concerned government offices to heed their calls and give them a chance to forward proper relocation programs so that they will not be displaced from the hometown Manila City in which they have built their entire livelihood.

According to the notice, the demolition is set to be done by the end of the month (end of September 2020). Support the urban poor communities of Intramuros by signing and spreading this petition!
