Stand Up Men
The Issue
It's time, men. Women and trans & gender non-binary people have been carrying the pain, the hurt, the literal scars, the horror, the anger, and the fear caused by sexual violence and gender-based hatred for millenia. The Cornell 7, the Hockey Canada 5, Ecole polytechnique, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and I could go on, and on, and on.
As a female friend texted me today, "We are so angry and exhausted and broken hearted. Fixing this is not our labour. It is the labour of men."
She's absolutely right. It's time to do more. We as men must end this.
Every single one of us has been affected by sexual violence and gender-based hatred. And if you are unaware of anyone close to you who has? Well, this means they simply haven't trusted you enough to tell you. We know that at least 1 in 3 women have experienced sexual violence. I think we all know it's likely much more.
But sexual violence and gender-based hatred shouldn't have to affect you or people close to you to make you stand up. You're a man, so stand up.
Here's how:
- Arrange with your male friends, family, and colleagues to demonstrate somewhere on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 2PM your local time. You will be demonstrating against sexual violence and gender-based hatred. Demanding our politicians do more. Demanding the leaders of our institutions to do more. Demanding your fellow men to do more.
- Stand up when you see or learn anyone, but especially women, trans, or gender non-binary people being harassed or assaulted. Call for help and intervene.
- Listen to women, trans, and gender non-binary people. They have been harassed so many times, they have whole systems to avoid sexual violence and hatred. Hear and hold their pain.
- Support groups which support women and trans & gender non-binary people. Any combination of your time, your talents and money will be welcome.
- Learn about healthy consent, and always seek it. Only accept an enthusiastic "Yes!" from someone who has the ability to consent before spicing things up. And stop what you're doing if you don't get that "Yes!"
Please join me in being a stand-up man.
