Stand Up for the Sourlands

The Issue

The Sourland Mountain Region is one of New Jersey’s most ecologically significant landscapes, spanning over 90 square miles across three counties. It is home to diverse wildlife, serves as a vital carbon sink, and provides clean drinking water for over 800,000 people in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Yet, this irreplaceable natural treasure is under serious threat. The loss of over a million trees due to invasive pests, unchecked overbrowsing by deer preventing forest regeneration, and relentless development pressures are rapidly degrading the region’s ecosystems. Without immediate action, we risk losing critical biodiversity, water quality, and climate resilience.

Right now, the New Jersey State Planning Commission is updating the State Development and Redevelopment Plan, but the Sourlands have NOT been included as an Area of Critical State Concern (ACSC)—a designation that would bring crucial protections and resources to safeguard this unique region.

By signing this petition, you are urging the State Planning Commission to recognize the Sourlands’ urgent need for protection and designate it as an ACSC. This designation would:
✅ Secure funding for forest restoration
✅ Improve regional coordination for sustainable land management
✅ Ensure responsible development that protects water, air, and wildlife

The Sourland Conservancy and partner organizations have worked tirelessly to preserve and restore this landscape. But we need your help to make sure the state prioritizes this vital region before it’s too late.

You do not have to be a resident of the Sourlands to support this petition! Here are a few good reasons why residents and non residents are signing:

  • The Watershed Institute estimates that more than 800,000 NJ and PA residents rely on the Sourland region for some or all of their clean drinking water;
  • A healthy forest reduces stormwater runoff and prevents flooding in the Delaware and Raritan Rivers;
  • The entire Sourland Mountain Region is a National Audubon Society designated Continental IBA ( Important Bird Area) macrosite. It is one of just 113 such sites in the United States. Migratory birds who rely on the Sourlands as a rest stop impact ecosystems from South America to the Arctic and everywhere in between;
  • 57 state listed, threatened, and endangered species rely on the Sourland region for survival;
  • The Sourland Region is the most intensive carbon sink in New Jersey;
  • and more!

Your voice matters! Sign the petition today to protect the Sourlands for generations to come.
