Stand Up for Medical Research: Preserve NIH Funding for Fiscal Year 2026!

The Issue

The Problem

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is crucial to the continued success of American health and medical research. NIH-funded studies have produced groundbreaking treatments such as Narcan (used to reverse opioid overdoses) and antiretroviral therapies that make HIV a manageable condition. NIH research has also pioneered transformative technologies like RNA vaccines, CAR T-cell therapy, and other life-saving innovations.

Beyond well-known diseases, the NIH plays a critical role in funding research on under-studied illnesses and serving neglected populations. For example, NIH’s Office of Rare Diseases Research investigates conditions affecting fewer than 200,000 people—areas often overlooked by private research due to limited profitability.

The Threat

Despite these accomplishments, President Donald Trump has proposed a federal budget plan that would cut NIH funding by 40%—a reduction of $18 billion from essential medical research.

Between February 28 and April 8, the administration reportedly terminated nearly 700 grants across 24 NIH institutes and centers, covering research areas such as aging, cancer, child health, diabetes, mental health, and neurological disorders. If the proposed budget is enacted, the NIH would be forced to downsize or merge its institutes, and cut funding to hundreds of cutting-edge projects.

Our Call to Action

We, the undersigned, urge Congressman Sam Liccardo, our local representative, to support a congressional spending bill that fully funds the NIH for Fiscal Year 2026. The NIH saves lives, drives innovation, and protects the health of all Americans.

Right now, the NIH needs us—just as much as we need it.
