William Lonergan Hill, co-founder and chief technology officer of the Bitcoin mixing service Samourai Wallet, was sentenced to four years in prison on November 19, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote in New York for conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. The story was covered in depth by The Rage. The sentence, reduced from the 60-month maximum requested by prosecutors, was influenced by Hill’s advanced age of 67 and his recently diagnosed autism, which his defense argued impaired his judgment and led to a "magical thinking" belief that non-custodial tools provided legal insulation. Hill, who pleaded guilty in a plea agreement on July 2024 alongside his co-founder Keonne Rodriguez, was also ordered to three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. The case, which allegedly involved the processing of over $237 million in illicit funds from sources including drug trafficking and cybercrime, marks a significant enforcement action against privacy-focused cryptocurrency tools.
