Stand Against Cyberbullying and Online Harassment: Demand Accountability and Change
The Issue
The heartbreaking truth is that cyberbullying and online harassment have reached a crisis point in the animal rescue world. These are not just internet trolls targeting strangers—they are attacking the very people who dedicate their lives to saving the voiceless, to fighting for the animals who have no one else to stand up for them. These individuals, many of whom work tirelessly for little or no recognition, are being targeted with relentless hate, threats, and defamation. One of my closest friends, a passionate animal advocate whose sole mission is to help those in need, is currently enduring an unspeakable campaign of online harassment. Every day feels like a battle for her peace, her safety, and her sanity. And tragically, she is not alone.
The statistics are staggering. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, over 36.5% of individuals have experienced cyberbullying. In the world of animal rescue, however, that number is even higher. Volunteers, fosters, advocates, and shelter staff are being ruthlessly attacked simply for doing the right thing—because they speak up, set boundaries, or choose to rescue animals in desperate need. Instead of being celebrated for their compassion and dedication, they’re vilified and torn apart.
The internet has become a weapon, one that’s being used to terrorize the very people trying to make the world a better place. The emotional toll is devastating and can have real, life-altering consequences. Studies show that the suicide rate among animal rescuers is alarmingly high, with many of these tragic deaths directly linked to the severe effects of online bullying and harassment. These aren’t just “digital disagreements” or “drama”—they are life and death situations. Harassment and defamation drive people to the edge, and the weight of such abuse can push them into the darkest places, often leading to irreversible decisions.
This is not just abuse—it’s a crisis. The people who care for animals, who clean litter boxes in the early hours of the morning, who bottle-feed newborns when no one else will, who work on shoestring budgets to save lives—these people are being destroyed by relentless online attacks. And they deserve better.
Now is the time to take a stand. The world must come together to protect these heroes who pour their hearts into saving lives, often at the cost of their own mental and emotional well-being. We must demand accountability and real, actionable steps to stop this toxic behavior:
🐾 Social media platforms must take greater responsibility. It's not enough to simply remove harmful content after the damage has been done. We need stronger monitoring tools and immediate action to remove harassment. Accounts engaging in targeted attacks, smear campaigns, and threats must face real consequences—including permanent bans and public accountability.
🐾 The animal rescue community must unite against this cruelty. We cannot tolerate bullying disguised as “criticism.” Yes, we need transparency and accountability, but we also need basic human decency. We must set higher standards within our own community to ensure that no one is left to face this battle alone.
🐾 Lawmakers must take the issue of online harassment seriously and extend legal protections to those targeted. Cyberbullying is not just a digital disagreement—it can lead to emotional trauma, career destruction, and, tragically, suicide. The people who dedicate their lives to rescuing animals deserve protection, not persecution. Harassment and defamation must be treated as the serious offenses they are, especially when they target those involved in life-saving work.
This isn’t just about one person. It’s about the countless animal rescuers who are silently suffering, being harassed and bullied for doing the most selfless work imaginable. The animals aren’t the only ones who need saving. The people who dedicate their lives to rescuing them deserve to be protected—protected from online hate, protected from being torn apart for simply doing what is right.
This petition is a stand—a stand for every rescue worker, volunteer, and advocate who has been torn down for the good they do. It’s a stand for those who never give up, for those who continue to fight despite the pain, the heartache, and the abuse they endure. We can’t allow this to continue.
Sign today. Speak out. Stand up for those who never stop fighting—for the animals and for each other. Let’s protect the people who protect the animals. Together, we can make a difference.
