Restore Main Street Bridge for Pedestrians

Restore Main Street Bridge for Pedestrians

The Issue

We the undersigned support the restoration of the historic Main Street Bridge for pedestrian use with emergency vehicle access. A pedestrian bridge with planned improvements up to Stillwater Avenue will provide an appealing pedestrian-friendly route between the west side and downtown, and it will ensure that children and families using the Mill River Park and its playground or walking into downtown can safely cross what is a five-street intersection. The bridge has been in disrepair for too long and is in danger of collapse. Now is the time to use available financial resources to make the bridge a source of pride and pleasure for our city and not a symbol of neglect.

The above picture is of a similar iron truss bridge converted to pedestrian use that is a good representation of what the Main Street Bridge could become.
