Staffordshire County Council decision to take away valuable sports pitches & building
The Issue
- Staffordshire County Council,
We are deeply concerned about your decision to build on the existing playing fields at Cherry Close & demolish the current Youth centre building utilised by several hundred children & Young Adults every week leaving user groups homeless until a satisfactory resolution has been finalised for current users & the wider community. - This decision will have a catastrophic impact on the local community and the environment & places a serious threat to Midland Soccer Academy future.
The facilities at Cherry Close provide a vital space for children and young people to engage in physical activity, socialise with their peers, and develop important life skills. The loss of this space & community building will have a negative impact on their health and wellbeing.
Furthermore, building on these playing fields will result in the destruction of green space, which is essential for maintaining biodiversity and reducing carbon emissions. The loss of green space also has a detrimental effect on mental health and wellbeing.
We urge you to explore opportunities to work alongside these vital community groups to secure like for like alternatives before forcing them to leave.
According to research conducted by Fields in Trust, access to green spaces is associated with improved physical health, mental wellbeing, social cohesion, and reduced levels of obesity. Additionally, studies show that children who engage in regular physical activity perform better academically than those who do not.
We implore you to prioritise the health and wellbeing of our community by preserving this valuable green space for future generations & honour the promises to work with MSA to ensure there is No Detrimental impact on their existing provisions. - Whilst we acknowledge there has been talks of a Medical centre development the decision to add a Care Home & additional housing Is extremely concerning & complete inconsideration for the recreational benefits of this space
- Sincerely,
Kieran Newey
