Assalamualiakum Wa Rehmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

In light of the recent student tragedies in universities across Pakistan, we the students of BUKC respectfully implore the Director General Rear Admiral Mukhtar Khan, Director Commodore Muzammil Hussain, HODs, and all other related authorities to address the safety hazards and security failures across campus and take proper measures to rectify them. The following list includes basic student requirements, safety and security measures that need to be instilled or improved upon at Bahria University Karachi Campus:

  • Need for Emergency exits/ stairwells
  • Need for functioning cafeteria
  • Need for internal passage to university from the parking lot for students, especially females
  • Preplanning of schedule, routes, transportation, and other means for students in case of a match or roads closing down. If the university is open for some time, dismissal should occur an hour well before blockades begin and it should be ensured that students, parents, and drivers have alternate route get home safe (not having to walk long distances or being forced out of the gates)
  • Strict implementation of rules against harassment (unwanted comments, gestures, honking, wolf-whistlings, catcalling, exposure, stalking, persistent sexual advances, and touching) from students, teachers, or staff members
  • Hygiene check of cafeterias and food ingredient check
  • Open gutters and sewage water being used on plants across campus should be stopped/regulated. This results in pollution, increased number mosquitos on still water, and disease
  • More bathrooms in every department and cleaner ones (please do a toilet count). In IPP, there is only ONE seated toilet available for ALL female students in the girl’s lavatory. Teachers/staff have locked and taken one for personal use when they already  have a seperate lavatory. Third squat latrine is inefficient as it is obsolete and difficult for students to use
  • Need for fans in main lobbies of every floor at IPP (where students are often told to wait if classes are full or not yet open). It becomes extremely hot and congested and students are often stopped from opening nearby windows
  • Fee challans given on time, with proper time given to the student to pay fees. There is a service fee charged, yet unprofessional and late services with numerous technical and management issues
  • Regulation of prices of snacks at the tuc shop. They charge 10-20 Rs. more than the original cost of the product. There are no fixed prices
  • Classes should be well-maintained. Air-Conditioners should be repaired and maintained on a monthly basis (especially for BBA - Quaid Block)
  • Need for a separate smoking area (smokers end up collecting outside main gate and this causes other issues)
  • The computer labs need to be functional. Most of the time computers are not working, at times the internet is not working, and other times the software required for the course is not available
  • Van service is available till 5:45 PM, while the classes for BSCS (Morning) are scheduled till 8:30 on some days
  • Need for more sections as current ones are too high in strength. The classes and labs at BUKC lack seating arrangements and computers. Students often have to stand at the back or sit on the floor
  • Open Futsal/basketball court involves a lot of risk as students and staff are passing by at all times. Need for divisions/safety measures
  • Effective regulation of traffic in front of main gate especially since the university has blockades in place. Cars should not be allowed to stand for more than 2 min on the main road in front of the university

We sincerely hope that these issues are taken seriously and that there are positive changes made to ensure students are learning in a safe and healthy environment. Thank you for your attention and cooperation of making our university a better place for all.
