Laura Camacho started this petition to St. Charles Health System and

The St. Charles Programs of Evaluation, Development and Learning (PEDAL) Clinic is Central Oregon's primary resource for pediatric neuropsychological testing. They have the unique opportunity to shape the conversation around autism as they equip caregivers with information about a new diagnosis.

Currently, PEDAL's post-autism diagnosis take-home packet includes information from Autism Speaks, an organization that pathologizes, tragedizes, and dehumanizes autistic people. It does not lift up actually autistic voices and in fact lobbies for the right to do harm to autistic people (ABA).

Most of the autistic community decries Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy as dehumanizing and abusive. Its roots are irrevocably entwined with "Gay Conversion Therapy," a traumatizing, bogus "homosexuality cure" for which UN experts have called a universal ban. No matter how it has evolved, ABA is fundamentally forced compliance training - a practice that reduces an autistic person into a set of behaviors to be eradicated and replaced.

We know the staff of the PEDAL clinic cares deeply about their patients and works continuously to learn and grow in their understanding of the population they serve.

With this confidence, we, the undersigned, request that the PEDAL clinic remove all Autism Speaks resources and ABA referrals from their take-home packet and replace them with pro-neurodiversity resources produced by neurodivergent individuals that will help caregivers cherish and champion their autistic children.
