FOR THE ATTENTION OF: Dr. Philipp Demandt, Martin Engler and staff of the Städel Museum,

We are writing to you to express our outrage at the ignorance displayed by the curatorial team’s decision to hang the work Ziegeln**** (Brick N**** in English) and its accompanying label at the Städel Museum.

Ziegeln**** is not simply a “tasteless provocation”; it makes light of racialized violence that continues to be the reality for Black communities in Germany now, when the Black Frankfurt community is busy on the streets demanding justice for the cases of Oury Jalloh, Rooble Warsame, William Tonou-Mbobda, and countless others who died as a result of racist violence in Germany and around the globe. Why do you feel that the most relevant action you can come up with in this moment is to ask whether or not your collection is racist? It is.

Continuing to pose this question means that you are failing to recognise what institutional racism is. It shows that you are not listening to the numerous responses to white art institutions that have been circulating in the past month online and in protests around the world. Your willful ignorance of these texts and actions, your on-going questioning of their validity is precisely how institutional racism operates. This is not a time for you to question, this is a time for action. It is on these grounds that we demand:

1. That you remove Ziegeln**** by Georg Herold from display immediately, and deaccession the painting. The money gained from this deaccession should be used to start a fund to purchase artworks by Black artists.

2. That you release a public statement acknowledging why you are removing the painting and what actions you are taking to commit to long-term anti-racist work.

3. That you commit to engaging in long-term visible and accountable anti-racist work in your institution. This will take many forms, including but not limited to: committing to hiring Black curators and staff, and diversifying your collection.

4. That you make publicly accessible data displaying the demographics of your collection, employees, and audience. 

5. That you make transparent your colonial history, including a publicly available statement on your website that details how the museum has benefitted from the legacies of colonialism. 

We need to express gratitude to the work of Black Artists In Switzerland whose own letter has been instrumental for shaping these demands. We urge you to read their letter: https://blackartistsinswitzerland.noblogs.org/ 

Failure to immediately rectify this by removing the painting and responding to all of our demands can only be understood as a willful upholding of the structures of racism and white supremacy.

Wir schreiben Ihnen um unsere Empörung auszudrücken. Empörung über die vom Kuratorenteam gezeigte Ignoranz, die sich in der Entscheidung ausdrückt, das Bild Der Ziegeln**** mit dazugehörigen Begleittext im Städelmuseum zu zeigen.

Das Zeigen des Ziegeln**** ist nicht nur eine “geschmacklose Provokation”, es  verharmlost rassistisch motivierte Gewalt, die weiterhin die Realität Schwarzer und POC in Deutschland darstellt. Die Frankfurter Black Community fordert auf den Straßen Gerechtigkeit für Oury Jalloh, Rooble Warsame, William Tonou-Mbobda und die zahllosen anderen, die in Deutschland und weltweit als Opfer rassistischer Gewalt ums Leben gekommen sind. Warum glauben Sie, dass es für das Städel-Museum in diesem Moment die richtige Handlung ist, die Frage zu stellen, ob Ihre Sammlung rassistisch ist? Sie ist es. 

Die Tatsache, dass Sie diese Frage überhaupt weiterhin stellen bedeutet, dass Sie nicht verstanden und anerkannt haben, was institutioneller Rassismus ist. Es zeigt, dass Sie nicht zugehört haben und nicht zuhören wollen, was die Vielzahl an KritkerInnen  in den letzten Monaten online und auf den Straßen der Städte weltweit fordern und einfordern. Ihre bewusste Ignoranz gegenüber diesen Texten und Aktionen, Ihr kontinuierliches Infragestellen Ihrer Gültigkeit - genau das ist institutioneller Rassismus und genau so  funktioniert er. 

Dies ist nicht der Moment für Sie zu fragen, dies ist der Moment zu handeln. Vor diesem Hintergrund fordern wir: 

1. Die sofortige Entfernung von Der Ziegeln****  von Georg Herold aus der Ausstellung und dessen Verkauf. Der Erlös hieraus soll dazu verwendet werden, einen Fond zu gründen, der dazu dient Werke von schwarzen KünstlerInnen anzukaufen. 

2. Dass Sie ein öffentliches Statement abgeben, in welchem Sie erklären, warum Sie das Bild entfernen und welche Maßnahmen Sie innerhalb des Museums ergreifen werden, um sich langfristig anti-rassistischer Arbeit zu widmen. 

3. Dass Sie sich langfristiger, sichtbarer und verantwortungsvoller anti-rassistischer Arbeit verpflichten. Dies umfasst vielfältige Maßnahmen, wie etwa, aber nicht nur,  die Anstellung schwarzer KuratorInnen und MitarbeiterInnen und die Diversifizierung Ihrer Sammlung.

4. Dass Sie sich verpflichten, Informationen über die  soziale und demographische Zusammensetzung Ihrer Sammlung, MitarbeiterInnen und BesucherInnen öffentlich zugänglich zu machen.

5. Dass Sie die koloniale Geschichte des Museums transparent machen, was unteranderem ein öffentliches Statement beinhaltet, das die Einsicht gibt wie das Museum von kolonialen Hinterlassenschaften profitiert.
