SSA wants to take back its employees' rights-- DON'T LET THEM.
The Issue
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is back at the bargaining table with the Social Security Administration (SSA). AFGE is busy renegotiating six key articles of our contract with SSA, and by doing so, our aim is to recruit and retain the talented and dedicated workers who give you the benefits you’ve earned throughout your working careers, timely and effectively, and when you need them most.
We, the employees of SSA, know how to serve the public. We are incredibly trusted, coming in just behind Park Rangers in the public’s confidence. However, after decades of stagnant budgets, growing retirements and resignations, and staffing levels that have hit a 25-year low, our Agency is in crisis. We need to see dramatic changes in the quality of our training, wages, and benefits to make SSA a competitive employer so we can continue delivering your earned benefits to you without difficulty or delay. SSA must commit to the care and support of their workers in the same way we commit to caring for and supporting our communities through the hard work we do. Today, we are asking for your help so that we can better help you!
We deserve a workplace that respects us. We deserve a workplace that empowers us to serve. We deserve to be treated with dignity. We are asking the Agency to agree to:
- Increase the quality of training for new employees and their mentors.
- Create opportunities for remote work where work is 100% portable.
- Create child care subsidies and student loan repayment reimbursement.
- Prevent abusive supervisors from bullying or micromanaging employees.
- Raise the General Schedule (GS) pay grades for all employees.
- Allow employees to participate in cross-component details and virtual assignments.
- Reestablish an equal union partnership with SSA management.
AFGE sees a bright future, one where each of us is valued, listened to, and rightly compensated for our hard work on behalf of the American people.
