1. a nearly transparent, faintly yellow, odorless, and almost tasteless glutinous substance obtained by boiling in water the ligaments, bones, skin, etc., of animals, and forming the basis of jellies, glues, and the like.(Courtesy Dictionary.com)
Medicines do not have a vegetarian or non-vegetarian sign, in 2012 we wrote to an Ayurvedic manufacturer of medicine asking whether the capsules were gelatin of animal origin which is sourced from animal bones and skin, these parts could be from pigs, cows or chickens, the reply was yes, it's animal origin. The sad fact is that all of us are consuming this and there is no way to identify whether the gelatin has come from pig, cow or goat.
The alternative is plant based capsules otherwise known (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) one issue is high cost which can be brought down in different ways 1. by people like you demanding an alternative and increasing production 2. by exempting vegetarian capsules from tax.
Another important reason to bring in vegetarian capsules is that people of particular faith should be given a choice in the medicine, as of now Indians of all faiths are taking cow and pork in the form of gelatin. We may need the medicine inside the capsules but not the pig and cow skin, bones and ligaments. Although gelatin was first made in the west, now many people there are exerting their rights as vegans or vegetarians or as a matter of religious belief. Technically there is no way of knowing from which creature the gelatin comes from. The safest method is to consume vegetarian capsules. Please see article below, kindly note that it's not for sensitive or young viewers.
Please sign the petition to request the medical fraternity to provide the vegetarian alternative. It's only a matter of switching, Veg capsules are available in the market, the price is higher at present but as more people like you exercise your right to choose not to eat pig or cow in the form of skin, bone and ligament gelatin we can bring about change for all. Your single signature, just a minute of your time can help us broaden our choices.
