Emma McFarland started this petition to Spotsylvania County Sherriff's Office

Dawn McCall is a black, nonbinary, low income high school student who was wrongly arrested on February 4th, the day of their eighteenth birthday, for a crime they did not commit. Dawn has a credible alibi; they were at home in their bed, reading the Percy Jackson books on a snowy evening. Their dad can back up their alibi, as can their social media activity from that day. Despite this, the Spotsylania County Sheriff's Office have arrested yet another innocent black person. Dawn is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond based on evidence that has yet to be released to the public. An article on Fredericksburg.com suggests that the arrest of Dawn may have been based on eyewitness testimonies.

However, according to The Innocence Project, faulty eyewitness identifications contribute to more than 68% of wrongful convictions in the United States. They add that despite the fact that there is solid evidence and surmounting proof of the inaccuracy of traditional eyewitness procedures, eyewitness identification still remains among the most commonly used and compelling evidence used against defendants in criminal cases.

Dawn is a beloved member of their community. They are a wonderful person, and they do not deserve this in any capacity. Please help us help them.

I beg of you to join me in asking the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office to make public their cause for arresting Dawn. I also ask of the Sheriff's Office to thoroughly and properly investigate Dawn's alibi, as this is the key to proving their innocence.

Donations to Dawn to help with legal fees would be heavily appreciated, if you are financially able to do so. All donations are being taken through Venmo

Thank you for all of your support.
