Gracie Sterling started this petition to Spokane, WA and

Spokane, WA has a statue right down the road of the Abraham Licoln statue of John Robert Monaghan who slaughtered many Samoan Natives in the Second Battle of Vailele. This man led soldiers into Samoan land, then wiped out a majority of the natives, including women, children, and elders. The raid was mainly focused on stripping resources from their land, and in the end he was killed in battle by an ambush of native Samoans.

This statue not only represents a cold-hearted killer, but within the placard, it explains his death,  referring to the natives as "savages". Not to mention, the other side shows the scene of Monaghan being ambushed by the very group he attacked.

This statue has recently been brought to attention of the media, but many have known of this killer. The term, "savages",has been highlighted on the placard itself, but that is not enough to bring justice to the ones who lost their lives. It represents how our country has killed off entire villages, then being praised for it.

I have created this petition to have Spokane remove this statue immediately. Spokane Historical Society should take this statue out of downtown and brought into a museum to educate, rather than commemorate. The The statue of Abraham Lincoln was sadly defaced on Thanksgiving day, but what about the statue right down the street from it that blatantly explains the savagery of John Robert Monaghan?

If we are genuinely wanting to change Spokane for the better, we must unite together and take down the exact thing that glorifies the deaths of entire villages.

Please not only help me, but help the community that has been facing these injustices for too long.
