Stop the Demolition of the Jensen-Byrd Warehouse Building

Please help support SPA in urging Washington State University (WSU) in considering options for renovating and reusing the historic Jensen-Byrd warehouse building, the largest landmark building in Spokane's University District and one of the largest historic warehouses in Spokane.
On December 13, 2011, WSU approved sale of the building to Austin, Texas-based Campus Advantage for the purpose of demolishing it and building new housing on the site, even though there is ample vacant land within the district that would make wonderful sites for new construction.
The building has been determined National (and local) Register of Historic Places eligible for its architectural significance, as a landmark warehouse and an example of the work of local architect Albert Held, as well as for its historical significance representing Spokane's history that is so intimately tied to early railroad commerce.
Historic Preservation is a sustainable, “green” building practice that creates jobs and injects money back into the local economy, while demolition sends high-quality materials to the dump and wastes the embedded energy of the original construction and spends money on transporting in new, lower quality materials.
