Split SFSU Commencement for Full Student Recognition

Split SFSU Commencement for Full Student Recognition
The Issue
Many colleges with larger student populations make it possible for each student to be recognized. Here at San Francisco State University, degrees take years of hard work, and each student deserves to feel like they had a moment on their special day. Currently, during the commencement ceremony held at Oracle Park, which extends over 6 excruciating hours, individual recognition is nearly impossible. Students don’t even get to hear their names called, and instead, they only get 2 seconds of fame on a four-way split screen on the Jumbotron.
The heartfelt speeches, while inspiring, consume substantial time, leaving graduates with just a fleeting acknowledgment. This is not the celebration and recognition we deserve after years of dedication and study. It’s disheartening that only a handful of students are chosen to "represent" their entire department, when in reality, every student has worked tirelessly to earn their degree and should have the privilege of being recognized individually.
We propose splitting our commencement into multiple ceremonies. This will not only allow each graduate to be individually acknowledged but also makes the event more meaningful and allows families to truly celebrate their loved one’s achievements. By dividing the ceremony, we can ensure every student's name is announced, their hard work appreciated, and their moment on stage extended beyond a mere instant.
Let’s embrace a solution that many large universities have successfully implemented, which will honor the dedication of every graduate. Sign this petition to advocate for the change, ensuring that future graduates of San Francisco State University receive a personalized and memorable commencement experience!
