“Spirited” Petition for Revival
The Issue
A plea to revive Spirited, the 2010-11 Aussie comedy starring Claudia Karvan, Matt King, Rodger Corser, Belinda Bromilow, Louis Fowler, Russell Dykstra, John Bluthal, and Charlie Hancock.
Spirited fans got a heavy slap in the face when season three was cruelly canceled. In its short but sweet two seasons it was well received by audiences and the industry, gaining a large and devoted fan base. “One of the most imaginative things on TV, blending romance, drama and comedy into a wonderfully satisfying whole”-Brad Newsome/The Age (2/8/2011). Ask any Spirited fan how many times they’ve watched the two seasons this series was allowed. I’d place bets more than thrice. The quirky script is full of little gems the viewer doesn’t notice in the first go. So, no choice but to watch again. And again. And again… An echoing Hurrah to the writers: Karvan, Perske, Pedenbach, Meadows and Murphy.
Spirited won the 2010 AWGIE for TV series writing and two ASTRA awards in 2011, including Best Drama. In 2012, it was nominated for several ASTRA awards, including Most Outstanding Drama and Favourite Australian Program.
In season one we watched Suzy the dentist grow into herself with the help of our friendly poetically foul-mouth ghost Henry, as they solved the mystery, “Who is Henry?”. The quirky love story and antics of the rest of the cast has brought joy, laughter and heartache to many a couch potato. After season 2, where we watch as Suzy and Henry stumble their way into a meeting of a life time, they were ripped from us. “Pencil Pushers” had no right to make the selfish decision to shelf Spirited. “Save Our Spirited. SOS” didn’t fall on deaf ears yet it proved to be too late. Where was the empathy for viewers, cast and crew? It was far from justified. It's like ordering a piece of cake and getting a plate of crumbs.
Please, hear the people of Spirited’s plea. Give us a season 3. We deserve it and the pay out will be fan-omenal. I’ll even buy a t-shirt.
