Target Area: West Decatur—specifically the neighborhoods surrounding Millikin University, the former Dennis Lab School site, West Main Street, and adjacent residential corridors.
Statement of Request:
We, the undersigned residents, students, property owners, and concerned community members of Decatur, Illinois, urgently petition the City of Decatur and local law enforcement to implement immediate traffic-calming measures and strict speed enforcement in our neighborhoods. The West Side is a dense, high-pedestrian area home to college students, children, cyclists, and elderly residents. However, reckless driving, excessive speeding, hit-and-run incidents, and near-miss accidents have reached an unacceptable level. The current infrastructure allows vehicles to travel at dangerous speeds through areas that require heightened driver awareness. To protect lives, prevent further property damage, and restore safety to our streets, we urge the City of Decatur to take the following actions:
1. Infrastructure Enhancements: Install physical traffic-calming devices such as speed bumps, raised crosswalks, or speed humps on vulnerable residential side streets and high-risk pedestrian zones.
Automated & Visual Enforcement: Deploy speed monitoring cameras, radar speed sign displays, and increased stationary police enforcement along West Main Street and surrounding intersections.
2. Pedestrian Safety Upgrades: Improve crosswalk visibility with high-visibility paint, pedestrian-activated flashing beacons, and improved lighting around university transit paths. Our neighborhood should be a safe place to walk, live, and study. We request that the City Council place this matter on an upcoming agenda to discuss funding, site assessments, and an implementation timeline for these safety measures.
