The Issue

Ram Island Residents,

Roadway safety on the causeways and throughout Ram Island is a concern shared unanimously by our community. The Rams is a special enclave on Shelter Island — valued for its calm, tranquility, and safety for the families who call it home.

The daily presence of lawn maintenance vehicles, construction trucks, water delivery vehicles, and commercial traffic serving the Rams Head Inn has meaningfully complicated our roads. These vehicles share narrow causeways and neighborhood streets with residents who are on foot, on bike, and in their cars. Many among us have experienced roadway incidents or near-misses firsthand. This is not an occasional nuisance — it is an ongoing safety hazard.

We are pursuing two related solutions. The first is a reduction of the posted speed limit from 35mph to 25mph on both causeways and throughout the Ram Islands. The second is active, vigilant enforcement by the Shelter Island Police Department. This petition addresses the first objective. Once accomplished, we will formally request that the Police Department prioritize monitoring and enforcement in our neighborhood.

We are presenting this petition directly to the Shelter Island Town Board and the Shelter Island Police Department as a demonstration of unified community support.

Please take a moment to sign. Your signature helps protect your neighbors, your children, and everyone who enjoys life on the Rams.

Thank you.
