Sanction Spearfish High School Soccer in 2014

This petition made change with 222 supporters!

Please support our Spearfish High School Boys and Girls soccer teams.

Our school board has agreed to sanction the boys and girls high school soccer programs starting with the 2015 season.   Recently, Sioux Falls and Rapid City school boards have agreed to sanction their programs starting with the 2014 season.    This move has left very few quality teams for Spearfish teams to play.   The table below shows the teams around the state that are left to sanction.

Brookings and Yankton have both indicated that they are slated for their school board meetings in May and will be asking for their school boards to sanction for the 2014 season.  Spearfish soccer has always followed the belief that in order to be the best, you compete against the best.  If one or both of these teams sanction, our pool of quality play is depleted even further.

While SDSSA and SDHSSA have agreed to allow sanctioned and non-sanctioned teams to play during this transition period, one must ask why a coach would choose to play a team they will not see in post-season play.  Chances are they will choose to reserve regular season games for those teams they may potentially see in post-season.  The majority of the schools on the western half of the state are sanctioned and would potentially choose to not play Spearfish if they are not sanctioned.  This will increase the travel expense that is incurred by SYSA.

Spearfish School District is the only school to require the local association to fund the majority of the high school program indefinitely even though they will be sanctioned.  Funds should not be an issue in the decision of the school board.  The school will only be assuming the coaches’ salaries at a graduated rate over five years while SYSA is funding the rest (i.e.: transportation, motels, uniforms, etc.)  The proposal presented by SYSA to the Spearfish School Board in September 2013 can be read at the the SYSA web page at the following location:, click on the high school link, and the proposal is in the sanctioning paragraph.

The Spearfish High School boys varsity soccer team has consistently achieved its goal of attending the state tournament 14 of the last 17 years and in doing so have produced All-State players every year and have amassed an impressive record finishes at the state tournament with two 8th place finishes, two 5th place finishes, five 4th place finishes, two 3rd place finishes, two 2nd place finishes and one state championship.  There is no other varsity sport at Spearfish High School with a record as notable.

There are eight senior boys that are in limbo for their final high school season.  These kids have been committed year round to soccer for no less than 10 years each.  This group is dedicated, along with their teammates, to making another trip to a QUALITY state tournament.  Sanctioning in 2014 will allow them the opportunity to finish out their high school careers competing against the best the state has to offer and give them access to awards that colleges are looking for.

Please sign this petition and show the school board that these kids deserve to play for a sanctioned program!!
