On October 11th, 2023, the nearly lifeless body of a German Shepherd mix female dog was found in a residential area of Welland, Ontario, Canada. Later named “Amari”, her body was not only flee and tick infested, but also emaciated to the point of a mere skeleton. She was pregnant, and would give birth to puppies shortly after being found, several still born, and most remarkably, some surviving.
This dog was not a stray. This dog had owners who (allegedly) inflicted this cruelty and abuse on her over the course of several years — resulting in the haunting image above.
in 2017 and 2018, a concerned citizen of Welland Ontario called the Welland SPCA to report that his neighbours who lived in the apartment above him were beating their dog, to which he was a witness. The SPCA said they would send an officer out, and yet 6 years later, this animal remained in the hands of her abusers. This animal is Amari.
In March of 2023, Amari was found wandering near Chippawa Park in Welland Ontario. She was missing most of her fur, was underweight and had open sores covering her body. She was returned to her owners by a citizen who offered to help to get Amari to a vet. The owners denied her help, and subsequently cut off all communication. This concerned citizen called the SPCA to report the owners and their address as she was concerned. The SPCA has stated that back in March, they shared the complaint with PAWS. And what was done about it? According to public knowledge, absolutely nothing.
Amari is an example of the systematic failure of our animal welfare system in Ontario. She suffered for SIX YEARS, despite multiple people doing the right thing, by reporting the catastrophic abuse and neglect she was victim to.
WE DEMAND ANSWERS
How was Amari failed on so many levels?
Why was their no intervention from authorities (SPCA OR PAWS)?
How can we better protect the animals in our community from monsters like the people responsible for this?
When will formal charges be brought against Amari’s abusers?
When will the other dog in the home of the abusers be removed/rescued?
If you see this picture of Amari’s broken body and feel you want to be her voice to demand the answers she deserves, please sign and share. Enough is enough.
