I think people who abuse animals should have to pay a larger fine and spend longer in jail. Currently animal abusers can't spend more then 5 years in jail or be fined more then 10 thousand dollars. I want animal abusers to have to spend at least 10 years in jail and be able to be fined over 10 thousand dollars depending how they have harmed the animal. This would give justice to the abused animals. This would impact not only me but all of Canada if this petition works. There are so many problems we don't know about. Did you know less than 0.025% of animal abuse complains result in successful convictions? That means about 99.075 animal abuse complaints aren't successful. It's most likely because most courts are more worried about people and less about animals. Sadly animal abuse isn't taken as seriously as it should be. Dog fighting is animal abuse as well. Even though dog fighting is illegal in Canada the abuser and animal must be present at a fight. So it's legal to breed, train and profit from animals that are used for fighting. Any signs of breeding, training and profit from dogs used in dog fights should be illegal and taken to court. Some surveys were conducted and in one of them 71% of domestic violence victims reported their abuser also targeted their animal. In another study of families under investigation for suspected child abuse, researchers found that pet abuse occurred in 88% of the families under supervision for physical abuse of their children. You might be asking "Why would anyone be cruel to animal?" Well the reasons are very similar to those of abusing people. Most likely the person feels powerless or unnoticed. Some might use it as revenge to hurt the person who cares about the animal they're abusing but it may just be so they feel in control. Some people don't even know exactly what animal cruelty and abuse is. Do you know? Animal cruelty can be a range of things from neglect to malicious killings. To help you understand how bad animal abuse is and how light the punishments are I want to share a story. Some police officers were investigating an animal abuse complaint and went to the home of 2 people. The officers entered the home and found a dog lying collapsed, covered in blood and fight injuries. Sadly the dog later died. The couple had many dogs and admitted some had died from dog fighting and were buried in the garden. The punishment was that they could no longer own animals, 12 weeks in prison, 12 week curfew and a fine of only $500. They killed animals and abused them and they were given such a light sentence. Hopefully this sheds some light on this issue.
