How many people, including children, have to die before something is done about the Clifton Beach?

Every single year, there are at the very least 2 drownings at Clifton Beach. So far this year (2021) there was an 11 year old that passed away, as well as a shooting in the parking lot of the “beach”.

The “beach” may be a fun place for families to go and hang out and spend time with one another, but the river is so dangerous. You have sink pockets that can take you under in a second. There are currents that could take you, rocks/crevices you can get stuck in. You don’t know what is under that water.

Now, let’s talk about the parking for the “beach”. No one utilizes the area on River Drive that Spartanburg County as made for parking, they stay on the Goldmine side of the river. You have people that fill up the parking lot and then because it gets so full, they park on the sides of the roads and leave you with one lane for cars to go through. I can’t tell you how many times I have almost hit people because they run out in front of me. Or you have other cars coming the same time you are and your stuck until one of you backs up. I personally have called the non emergent line to complain about the parking and over crowding and was basically told it wasn’t a big deal and nothing could be done. If you live on Goldmine or travel on it then you know what a nightmare it is just trying to get to where you’re going.

We are asking that the county hire trained lifeguards and put them out on the “beach”. This at least gives some sort of “water safety” for the “beach-goers”. We are also asking that “security” be put in place so that the alcohol, drugs, weapons, etc. are kept off the beach and so that it is kept “family friendly”. Security could also help the parking issues that are happening. We also would like certain rules to be put in place, such as, children up to a certain age have to wear life jackets while near or in the water.

We know that this would cost money, so we are also suggesting that you charge the “beach-goers” a small fee to enter the “beach”. This would help with over crowding and parking, as well as pay for upkeep and lifeguards.

If any of these suggestions wouldn’t work, then we also propose to shut it down. Block it off where people can’t have access to it.

How many people does it take getting hurt or dying before the county steps up and does something about it?

This petition will be taken to the Spartanburg County Council in hopes that the community can make a change.
