Spar - please STOP selling eggs from caged hens
The Issue
A few months ago, I went into my local Spar to buy some eggs. I was surprised to see that they stocked 'eggs from caged hens'.
Although I appreciate the clear labelling, I cannot see the need to stock these alongside free-range eggs.
Use of barren battery cages has been banned in European Member States since 1 January 2012. The use of 'enriched' cages however is still permitted. Cages confine hens, providing little three dimensional space and limiting the hens’ ability to carry out natural behaviours such as walking, wing flapping, dustbathing, perching and nesting. They are never allowed outside and do not see natural light.
In terms of cost, in my local Spar:
6 eggs from caged hens = £1
6 eggs from free range hens = £1.30
For the difference of 30p, I would like to think we can afford to give these hens a significantly better quality of life.
I have contacted Spar repeatedly. They have replied to say it is an issue I need to take up with the local store (I am still waiting for them to give me their details). They have not responded to my question of why they chose to allow this type of egg to be stocked.
As the eggs I saw were Spar branded, I consider this to be an issue for Spar as a company to address, not the local store.
(Thank you to Compassion In World Farming for some of the above content #endthecageage )
The ideal outcome would be that Spar cease to sell these eggs. If this is not possible, I would like them to respond to my request to explain why they sell these eggs - currently 6 weeks and counting...
