Why this petition matters

Started by Kasia Sko

We, the residents of Brenchley Gardens a small estate of 95 flats/houses in SE23 want Southwark Council to stop developing on our estate.

Brenchley Gardens has a brilliant community. We run the estate ourself and rarely have an empty property. People stay here for a long time. 50% of our residents are in social housing. The green space has been a saviour in lock down for those of us with small children, older people who do not feel comfortable walking too far away and generally for our mental health.

It is well evidenced that access to green space is not only good for our mental health but one of the keys to a thriving community. And that's what we are at Brenchley Gardens. We grow our own fruit and veg, make compost, have BBQs, picnics, look out for one another - we are a community.

Currently, Southwark Council have proposed putting a new 'infill' block of flats on one of our communal gardens (the corner of Brockley Way) as well as proposing new 'roof top homes' - another storey on each of the 4 blocks.

We have been consistently lied to Southwark Council for over a year now - and we are saying NO.  We are all for more social housing but not when we can't trust the Council or at the detriment of green space
