Southern Housing - stop selling off our social housing
The Issue
Southern Housing is selling off this three bedroom family home at auction
https://www.allsop.co.uk/lot-overview/lot/r260225-121
4 Wellington Gardens in Battle, is a three bedroom house built by the council which provided generations of local people with a secure affordable home, until it was left empty by Southern Housing for the past year and has now been put up for sale.
This house was one of thousands of council homes in Rother that were gifted to the forerunners of Southern Housing in 1998. A clause in the transfer deed stated that they should not be sold without the express permission of the Government because they were supposed to remain social rented homes forever. They were not given away to be sold to cash rich bidders at auction who will likely make a handsome profit out of them.
Thousands of families in East Sussex are living in overcrowded flats or temporary accommodation and are desperate for a secure affordable home like this.
We call on Southern Housing to take this property off the market and put it on the social housing bidding list immediately.
We call on Southern Housing to stop selling off ANY MORE social housing and invest in upgrading and retaining these valuable community assets - or give them back to the council!
