California: Fight for Your Right for Power

California: Fight for Your Right for Power
The Issue
On November 8th, 2018 the Camp fire ripped through the town of Paradise, California. The fire originated from a faulty electric transmission line that was managed by PG&E. As of 2019, both SCE and PG&E have began shutting off power to its customers in an attempt to prevent any further wildfires. Not long after the devastating fires, PG&E filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and SCE is currently in the process of being sued by LA County for the Woolsey fire.
Both companies are using the power shut-offs as a bandaid for the current issue at hand. The current power shut offs are both affecting customers and businesses alike. The week of the 20th, October 2019, LA County was hit with the Tick fire early afternoon. Due to the power shut-off many Canyon Country and Agua Dulce residents were unaware of the fire till it had already reached their backyards. This "easy" solution has taken the homes, belongings, and the wellbeing of my community and our local family run businesses. We are asking for SCE and PG&E to update their facilities and start burying their lines--we are asking our state and local government to step in and help regulate our current for profit utility companies. The prevention plan they've implemented so far has only brought our community more issues. Residents of both Northern and Southern California deserve access to power. They have a right to it.
