Assign W-64 neighborhood to Lake Middle School

The Issue

All three of the Middle School boundary proposals currently before the ISD 833 Board of Education propose to move children in W-64 neighborhood out of Woodbury Middle School and into schools outside of our community. Two (Plan C, G) of the recommendations would move W-64 to Oltman Middle School, and the third (Plan S) would move W-64 to Cottage Grove Middle School.

We request the District revise one or more boundary proposals to place W-64 at Lake Middle School. This can be achieved by swapping W-64 with W-61 (currently uninhabited farm fields and sports fields) in the proposed Plan C and Plan G.

Moreover, we object to criteria that evicts Woodbury residents from Woodbury Middle School (a space constrained school) to make room for the Spanish Immersion choice program that is currently housed Cottage Grove Middle School (a below capacity school). W-64 residents recognize the need for boundary changes due to residential development, but forcing hundreds of existing households out of their community is wrong, unnecessary and unwarranted. Sending W-64 children to Lake Middle School promotes safe and effective transportation along the city's bike trails, and allows for a consistent cohort between middle school and high school.

Please recognize that W-64 children attend Bailey Elementary, which is a broken elementary to middle school cohort. Current recommendations would diminish our middle school to high school cohort as well, as compared to Lake Middle School which feeds the largest group to our high school.

We request that the District create an opportunity that will allow W-64 children to attend Lake Middle School, the school located in our community.
