Don't cut the Student Assistance Counselors at Columbia HS in 2013-2014

The South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education is making budget cuts and if passed, these cuts will eliminate one of the Student Assistance Counselors from Columbia High School. The current SACS, Philip Lester and Judith Cohen, are two counselors that not only counsel students who are in crisis, but also run the Peer Counseling program. Mr. Lester and Mrs. Cohen work with high school students who are struggling with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bullying, eating disorders, self-harm and many, many other issues that students face each day. The Peer Counseling program works with the elementary schools for the Lunch Box Buddy program; with the middle schools doing presentations on drug and alcohol abuse, internet safety, and sex-ed; and other high school students for one-on-one counseling. Without these programs and the SACs themselves, South Orange-Maplewood students will be left without a professional counselor to turn to.
