Kirsten Robb started this petition to South Lanarkshire Council

Our parks have been closed or neglected over many years. In one South Lanarkshire Council ward alone (East Kilbride East) local communities have seen 2 parks closed and at least 4 have had equipment removed, not replaced, delayed replacement or even locked up with no information provided (see below for list*).

We all want Scotland to be the best country for children to grow up in. We believe that everyone should have access to free spaces to play for health, wellbeing and community activity. This Right to Play is also enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Therefore we call on South Lanarkshire Council to commit to formally recognise and act on children’s right to play by preparing a South Lanarkshire Play Strategy. We ask that SLC reverse park closures made since May 2021, renew every local play park and work much harder at a community level with youth, community workers and other agencies to bring people together to address any anti-social behaviour.

*Hazelhead Park: Closed and equipment removed May 2021; Long Calderwood Park: closed a few years ago; Othello Park: swings removed since December 2019; Lammermoor Park: large chute removed in 2020; replacement promised by end March; then end April and then the end of May and it was still not done as of 30th May; Glen Doll Park: chute removed and rest of park not well maintained; Stratford Park: chute locked up with no community information as to the reasons for this.
