The Issue

Constant flooding near the War Memorial has rendered Gilbertfield Road impassable on a regular basis. Standing water is hiding a number of massive pot-holes that have damaged vehicles and with the road frequently closed due to flooding it creates excess traffic on Lettrickshills Crescent and Lightburn Road which in itself is a road safety issue in a 20mph limit area.

Although once a quiet country road, this is now a main route for lots of traffic accessing new local housing estates as well as lorries and other heavy traffic carrying out building works in nearby new build estates at Cairns and Greenlees Road.

The council's position on Gilbertfield Road is that they have passed the buck to Dundas Estates as “they didn’t know drainage was an issue until Dundas started building”. This is either a lie or an example of incompetence as there has always been a historic flooding issue at this site.

They want to wait till Dundas start building again and have them fix the drainage issue but this may never happen. Three years on from the completion of “phase one”, Dundas haven’t even bought the land proposed for phases two and three, never mind announcing any kind of timescale to start developing it.

Residents of this area who use this road pay council tax so that South Lanarkshire Council maintain the local roads and infrastructure, not so that they can pass the buck to a private company who may never ever solve the issue.

Please sign this petition to let SLC know that this is unacceptable and pressure them to properly fix this issue once and for all.
