And the continuous tremors following the earthquakes.
We have a deep fear about the dangerousness of the location of the nuclear power plants with the news that the Korean peninsula is not safe anymore from the earthquakes.
Six nuclear reactors are located in the home of heavy and chemical industries, Ulsan. Moreover, two reactors, Shin Kori 5 and 6 are set to go into operation next year. Almost 4 million residents live within a 30 km-radius of the Shin Kori.
For comparison, Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant had 160,000 residents within the 30km-radius. It even had the emergency generator. Nevertheless, because of the sudden stoppage of electricity, it brought a fatal radiation, health, pollution etc. effects into not only that area, but an extensive range including many other countries
Experts mentioned that South Korea has a possibility of the sudden discontinuity of electricity too.
The builders and the authority say that they are safe but we cannot agree with them. In May 2012, there was a power failure in Kori – 1 which is shut down now - that led to swift rising of the core temperature. A manager chose to hide the fact. Later, the people who were involved in it were charged with covering up an incident that was potentially dangerous.
This proves that the nuclear power plants are not as trustworthy as people insist.
It is too late to regret it after the terrible disaster broke out. We strongly want to live in where we can set our hearts at rest.
Thank you.
