July 15, 2021, ARK119 raided a large illegal dog farm in Incheon Ganghwa (Incheon Ganghwa-gun Buleun-myeonSamseong-ri 439) and live streamed the whole event on YouTube. The livestream video was taken down but it’s back up now. Click HERE to watch. There must have been threats from someone. I watched the entire livestream of over 3 hours and it was HELL. I am very traumatized by what I saw. So much unspeakable suffering of so many defenseless animals which devastated me. ARK119 brought with them an SBS News report team and contacted local police and government officials, as well as an agency that protects disabled people to come out to the scene. (Watch the news below) A man with an intellectual disability had been working at the dog farm for many years, and it is suspected that the female dog farmer had exploited his disability. The government authorities arrived at the scene to rescue this man but the dogs weren’t as lucky.
This illegal dog farm has violated approximately 10 different laws and will most likely be shut down, but unfortunately the dogs, 500 according to the SBS news, cannot be saved. ARK119 doesn’t have the money to save that many dogs, and most likely all of them will be sold to slaughterhouses or to other dog farms. It’s heartbreaking, but this is the reality of South Korea’s dog meat industry; no one can save all the dogs at these dog farms. The task is an enormous one, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, a sum that the dog rescuers don’t have.
After repeated calls from the ARK119, the Ganghwa County veterinarian and the Livestock Department officials came out to the dog farm to take a look at the conditions of the dogs. What do they think about the condition of these dogs? These dogs were given rotten kimchi slop garbage covered with mold, no water anywhere in scorching heat, forced to stand on rusty, raised wire cages. The dogs are forced to have puppies over and over in their own feces, puppies dying and decaying in front of their moms, dogs in a hellish condition with no medical care. Is this animal cruelty or not?
Why does the Ganghwa government do nothing about countless, hellish dog farms just like this one scattered throughout their county? What is Incheon doing about the illegal dog farms in their city that are brutalizing and torturing tens of thousands, or possibly even hundreds of thousands of dogs?
Shame on Incheon, shame on Ganghwa County and shame on the South Korean Government!
Animal activists who have been working many months trying to get this dog farm closed are left with brokenhearted and feeling helpless…. Shutting down illegal dog farms is the responsibility of their government and not the animal activists. But because of South Korea’s callous, profoundly indifferent government, and lack of moral leadership, millions of dogs live in utter hell today.
