Stop the Dog and Cat Meat Trade Worldwide
5 sept 2017
The WVA 2017 Congress was held last week, with hundreds of veterinary professionals travelling from all over the world to South Korea to attend the conference. Though the WVA would not allow Nami Kim or Dr. Myung to do a presentation on the South Korean Dog Meat Trade, it was reported to me last week by Dr. Natalie Waran, one of the vet speakers at the Congress and wonderful advocate for our non-human best friends, that the Global Seminar on Animal Welfare on Day 3 of the Congress did involve a presentation by Dr. Hye-Won Lee on "Dog Meat Production in Asia". According to Dr. Waran:
"The(se) talks were well received and alongside the horrors associated with dog meat farming, we also discussed the dreadful practices associated with the Donkey Skin Trade in China and parts of Africa. After the excellent but harrowing talk given by Hye Won Lee, the audience engaged in questions, and then I know that afterwards, a number of vets had discussions about the ethics of eating meat and the welfare of the animals who are to be eaten. She certainly raised the issues and it was clear that the practices involved with dog meat eating (and we were shown pictures), such as the housing, handling, transport and killing methods are all unacceptable."
I'm so pleased the issue was brought to light during the Congress, but more must be done by the WVA to help end the trade. The WVA should also consider carefully in the future its choice of conference locations and whether they want to directly support the economies of the main dog-meat-consuming countries, such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia. This time it was South Korea.
Because conference has finished, I will now be closing this petition and delivering the final signatures, nearly 25,000, to the WVA. In the closing letter, I will thank the WVA for including the presentation on the Asian dog meat industry and also urge them to continue to support the spreading of awareness and ultimately the banning of theis cruel and barbaric trade worldwide.
Thank you supporters for all your work to share and promote this petition. You have emphasized to the WVA and the veterinary community at large that the Dog Meat Trade is unacceptable and it's days are numbered.
I urge you to please support Nami Kim and her foundation, Save Korean Dogs, who are working directly with the South Korean government to outlaw the dog meat trade in this country.
Thank you,
Jenny Wilkins
