White’s Beach In South Hero Gets A Name Change

By MIKE DONOGHUE - Islander Staff Writer

White’s Beach in South Hero is no more. The Selectboard has voted 5-0 to change the name of the recreational facility to the “South Hero Town Beach.” Chairman Jonathan Shaw said the change follows discussion off and on over the past year. The municipal beach on West Shore Road had received its name due to it being next to a farm of a family with the last name White, he said. However last summer a person visiting South Hero and unaware of the history raised a question about whether the name meant it was for white people only, Shaw said. He said race was never an issue. He said there was board discussion at a few meetings and initially the plan of the Selectboard was to leave the name in place. The thought was to add a small sign explaining where the name came from to help educate those unaware of the history, he said. “It is not now, or has ever been, a racial designation,” the minutes of a recent Selectboard meeting noted. Shaw said the question popped up again and the board got some push to change the name. After further discussion the Selectboard agreed to change the name. New signage and wording will need approval from the Selectboard. The current parking ordinance will also need adjusting to reflect the new title.
