Bring Back South Haven Lifeguards

On Saturday, July 13th, tragedy once again struck in Lake Michigan at a South Haven beach. A 13 year old boy, visiting our lake shore town with his family, drown while swimming off of the South beach.
South Haven Area Emergency Services responded swiftly and, as always, were courageous and diligent in their efforts to recover both swimmers (see story above for details). But, could we as a community be doing more to protect our swimmers (local and visitors alike) and support our emergency service teams? Is it not our duty to take all possible measures to ensure our swimmers are safe and informed?
This year Lake Michigan has already claimed the lives of 17 people. That is almost half of the total number of drownings in all of the Great Lakes to date. In 2018 the total number of drowning deaths in Lake Michigan was 43 (data source linked below). In Michigan we are privileged to have more than 1,220 beaches. Additionally, Michigan boasts the longest freshwater coast line in the nation but, despite beach safety programs that include lifeguards being widely renowned as the "gold standard" in safety, fewer and fewer communities protect their beach goers with lifeguards. It is the hope of many in South Haven that we can, once again, demonstrate that, above all else, the safety of our visitors and locals alike is paramount. We can do that by protecting our public beaches with lifeguards.
If you support bringing lifeguards back to our public South Haven beaches, we encourage you to sign and share this petition. Even if you have reservations about some aspects of a potential South Haven lifeguard program but support the possibility, please sign and share to at least open up the conversation again among city officials, beachfront safety experts & the public.
We understand that the prospect of a South Haven lifeguard program is a complex decision with many factors to consider, but, one life lost is one life too many. Let's open the dialogue and let our city know, we support safer beaches in South Haven. We support South Haven lifeguards.
